Gurnak is an NHS General Practitioner and is passionate about digital innovation and reducing health inequalities. He is highly experienced in the transformation of clinical pathways, having been involved in numerous projects around the UK. These have included digital pathways for long term conditions management, virtual wards, deterioration detection in individuals with Learning Disabilities and Proactive Care at Home. He is currently an ICB Deputy Chief Clinical Information Officer, and Clinical Lead for Urgent and Emergency Care, Cancer Care & Community Care Partnership. Gurnak is keen to promote digital transformation whilst ensuring that innovation does not widen health inequalities. He is a keen advocate of patient empowerment and ensuring that patients remain at the very centre of any innovation and transformation.

Dr Tom Micklewright is a GP in Cheshire and a renowned expert in digital health. Dr Micklewright works as Clinical Lead for Digital Transformation in Primary Care for Cheshire and Merseyside ICB and as Medical Director at ORCHA the world’s leading digital health quality management platform. Previously, Dr Micklewright has held senior positions within the British Medical Association and has led national projects to expand telehealth services across the private and public sector. His passion is patient empowerment and Dr Micklewright speaks internationally on the role of mhealth, particularly health apps, in supporting patients to self-manage and become equal partners in their health and care.

Opening keynote panel - How can we optimise our primary care workforce?

A highly accomplished clinical leader with more than 23 years of experience as a practicing GP in a variety of local and national roles.
She co-created and Chaired the National PCN Network within the NHS Confederation attaining significant influence of national policy during this time. She served as a clinical director for a Primary care network from their inception, for 3 years.
She has achieved national recognition for her innovative work in relation to improving immunisation during the Covid-19 Pandemic, appearing on local and national media.
She was recognised as ‘GP of the Year’ in 2019 by the General Practice Awards and voted an outstanding BAME leader and featured in the HSJ Wildcard most influential healthcare leaders list for 2021. She appeared in the BAME leader runner up list in the HSJ in 2024.
She has significant experience of managing transformational change using quality improvement methodology and a background of educational facilitation and coaching.
She ran her own GP practice for over 20 years and these days she works as a sessional GP and in advisory roles.

Welcoming everyone back for day two, our opening panel will debate how we best match available resources to the increased demand for primary care now and in the future. Despite efforts to address recruitment and retention in the GP workforce, and the introduction of supporting ARRS roles, challenges certainly persist – especially with the recent National Insurance increases. Many GP practices are concerned that this will lead to job cuts, exacerbating the workforce crisis. Key topics will include strategies to tackle workforce shortages; the role of AI and digital solutions in improving workforce morale, productivity and engagement; and leveraging data to improve staff planning, retention, and talent management.

Annie is a GP Partner and Trainer at Wide Way Medical Centre and Chief Clinical Information Officer for Primary Care in SWL ICB. She is energetic and passionate about innovation to improve health outcomes and build staff resilience. Annie continues to strive for improvements with transformation projects, teaching & mentoring. Wide Way Medical Centre pioneered the GP support service using Digital enablers to collaborate with London Ambulance in a multidisciplinary model to support GP receptionists, which was nominated for an HSJ award 2024 and won “Digital Innovation of the Year” at General Practice Awards 2024.

Gary is a GP Partner in Peterborough, Chief Clinical Improvement Officer at NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough ICB, and an active member of the NHS Assembly.
Gary was Clinical Chair of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough CCG (2016- 2022) and is a former Vice Chair (External Affairs) of the Royal College of General Practitioners (2019-2022). He has also served as a member of the Council of the Academy of Royal Colleges.
Gary has worked in salaried, Partner, trainer and Out of Hours GP roles since 2005 and was a founding director of the local GP Federation (Greater Peterborough Network) in 2015.

Liam is a newly-qualified GP based in Cambridge. He recently completed the National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow Scheme, spending a year working with the Primary Care Team at NHS England. He has previously co-led The Big GP Consultation and Next Generation GP.

Liam currently divides his time between the Health Equity Evidence Centre, where he focuses on empowering policymakers and practitioners with evidence-based insights to tackle health inequalities, and Cambridge City Foodbank, where he is taking a holistic approach to tackling food insecurity and poverty in his local community.

Dr Neil Modha is a practicing GP at Thistlemoor Medical Centre in Peterborough, serving a deprived population with many different cultural backgrounds, he has helped built the practice up from caring for 7k patients to the current 32k. He has experience of operating a community pharmacy alongside an endoscopy unit and is currently planning further initiatives relating to community care.
